Knowing what you want to do for the rest of your life can be a very daunting and uncertain decision, but it’s one that everyone has to start planning for. It’s prudent to look into the job prospects of a career you’re interested in to see whether or not there will actually be work for you once you graduate. To help you out, we’ve prepared a list of five of the highest in-demand careers in Canada for 2017 leading into 2018:

1 – Production Manager

Salary: $70,000

Production managers plan and organize production schedules for manufacturing plants and make sure everything is going according to plan. A few other responsibilities include budget organizing with the client. The career is expected to grow around three percent between 2011-2020, the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS) finds.

2 – Registered Nurse

Salary: $72,000

Like many other careers in healthcare, registered nurses enjoy a high demand for their careers. COPS found that the number of projected job openings far exceeded the amount of projected job seekers. A passion for helping others is often what drives people towards the nursing profession.

3 – Drivers

Salary: $51,000

Whether they are truck drivers or other general goods transporters, drivers are needed to transport products across the country. Public transportation, in its expansion, requires more drivers.

4 – Trade Workers

Salary: $51,000

Manufacturers and organizations around Canada have shortages in their workforce, making the trades a very promising career. HVAC, plumbing, welders, assemblers, mechanics, and many other jobs are ripe with opportunities. Students who like mechanics and finding out how things work or how they’re made are increasingly considering a profession in the trades.

5 – Software Engineer

Salary: $70,000

With so many companies and businesses embracing the online world and software industry, a need for software engineers has practically exploded. What software engineers do is develop the coding for software on computers and mobile devices. If you have a creative passion through data and arithmetic, it’s a good idea to consider this career
